The master’s thesis constitutes a scientific project that must demonstrate originality within the fields of the master’s program, either through the generation of new knowledge, the exercise of independent critical thinking, or a combination of both. The master’s thesis provides an opportunity to assess and guide the research capacity of the graduate student, aiming to foster the development of valid scientific initiatives within a specific area of the program.

Specific objectives:

  • Review and critical analysis of existing knowledge.
  • Description and interpretation of a phenomenon or topic.
  • Application of theoretical and methodological approaches, techniques, and tools.
  • Development of new theoretical and methodological approaches, techniques, tools, or other innovations in the investigated scientific field.

Graduate students are eligible to submit a thesis proposal after successfully completing at least six (6) courses from the first and second semesters. The application is submitted during the first week of the third semester and must include the proposed title (in both Greek and English) as well as the proposed supervisor. If the student has not completed the required number of courses by the end of the second semester, the application may be submitted in a later semester, provided the above condition is met.
The thesis is written in Greek. Exceptionally, and following approval by the Program’s coordinating committee, English may be designated as the language of writing. The minimum duration for the preparation of the thesis is one semester.
The examination of the thesis takes place at the end of the third semester. If the requirements are not met, the defense may be scheduled in a subsequent examination period, within the maximum duration of study (six semesters). Approval of the thesis requires its successful oral defense before the Examination Committee.
The evaluation of the thesis is based on its quality, the completeness of the presentation, and the oral defense. The final grade is calculated as the average of the grades assigned by the three members of the Examination Committee.
In case of a negative evaluation, the student may resubmit the revised thesis, revised according to the Committee’s comments, after two (2) months. If the thesis is rejected a second time, the student is excluded from the award of the master’s degree.
Detailed guidelines for the preparation of the thesis are provided in Appendix 2 of the Regulations of the Master’s Program in Human Geography, Development and Spatial Planning.
