Since the academic year 2014–2015, the Department of Geography at the University of the Aegean has offered a Postgraduate Program (M.Sc.) entitled: “Human Geography, Development, and Spatial Planning.”
Teaching may be conducted entirely (up to 100%) through distance learning methods, utilizing modern digital platforms.
The program leverages the Department of Geography’s expertise in Human Geography and Spatial Planning, to support the professional development of its graduates. It offers specialization in thematic areas such as:

  • Migration and the Geography of Mobilities, Globalization and Uneven Development, Geopolitics,
  • Urban Development and Urban Policy, Spatial Planning with an Emphasis on Urban–Rural Dynamics,
  • Applications of Geoinformatics in Urban Geography and Regional Development,
  • Social Movements,
  • Methods for Communicating and Teaching Human Geography,
  • Research Methodology in Human Geography.

Subject & Purpose of the Postgraduate Program

The Postgraduate Program (M.Sc.) focuses on on advancing scientific knowledge and specialization in the fields of Human Geography, Development, and Spatial Planning.

The main objectives of the program are:

To promote scientific knowledge and research in the aforementioned fields.

To ensure that the postgraduate education provided is aligned with international standards in the relevant scientific disciplines, research specializations, and professional fields.

To align postgraduate education with the specific developmental needs of the country and its particular spatial challenges.

To train research professionals equipped with modern, competitive knowledge for the integrated European and global labor market.

Acquired Knowledge, Skills & Attitudes

Graduates of the Postgraduate Program acquire the ability:

  • To think in spatial and human-geographical terms, with an in-depth understanding of both fundamental and advanced concepts,
  • To apply methods of data analysis and processing in order to investigate issues, phenomena, and processes in human geography,
  • To communicate research findings using a combination of methods, tailored to the topic, purpose, and target audience,
  • To connect and integrate theory and concepts with empirical application in the fields of human geography, development, and spatial planning,
  • To utilize skills relevant to the labor market and professional practice,
    To employ contemporary tools and methods of human geography for the investigation and analysis of human-geographical and spatial planning phenomena,
  • To adopt a critical approach in linking theory with empirical application, emphasizing contemporary applications of human geography,
  • To be competent, critical, and creative users of human-geographical research methods, thereby becoming informed, responsible, and active citizens who contribute to building an economically sustainable and socially just world.

To whom is it addressed?

he Master’s Program accepts applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • Holders of a first-cycle degree (Bachelor’s degree) from Higher Education Institutions (Universities and Technological Educational Institutes) in Greece or from recognized equivalent institutions abroad.
  • Graduates of the Higher Military Educational Institutions, the Hellenic Police Officers’ School, the Fire Academy’s Officers’ School, and the Coast Guard–Hellenic Coast Guard Officer Cadet School.
  • Students in the final stage of their studies at Greek higher education institutions, provided that they have completed all graduation requirements and submit an official certificate before their enrollment in the Master’s Program.

How Do I Apply?

Each year, the Postgraduate Program (MSc) publishes a Call for Expressions of Interest for the admission of new postgraduate students for the upcoming academic year. The announcement is posted on the website of the Department and the Institution, on the relevant Study in Greece portal, and on social media. It is also sent to related Departments and Career Offices of Greek Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) where the program is scheduled to run in the following academic year.
The call specifies the admission requirements, eligible categories of degree holders, the number of available places, the admission procedure, the selection criteria, the application deadlines, and the required supporting documents.

The application and electronic copies of supporting documents are submitted exclusively through the electronic system of the University of the Aegean, "Nautilus" (https://nautilus.aegean.gr) from May 18 to September 6, 2026 at 23:59. Interviews will be held from September 9 to 10, 2026.

Required Supporting Documents

  1. Application form for candidacy submission.
  2. Detailed Curriculum Vitae.
  3. Photocopy of degree/diploma or Certificate of Completion of Studies.
  4. Official Transcript of Records of undergraduate courses (including precise GPA).
  5. Publications in peer-reviewed journals, if any.
  6. Proof of professional or research activity, if any.
  7. Photocopy (both sides) of identity card or passport.
  8. Two (2) letters of recommendation, preferably from professors of Greek or foreign Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) or from researchers at recognized research institutions in Greece or abroad, using the official Recommendation Letter Form available in the “Nautilos” system.
  9. Certificate of foreign language proficiency (English, French, Spanish, German, etc.) at a level of good knowledge (B1 or above), in accordance with the standards of the Council of Europe Language Policy and the European Federation of National Institutions for Language.
  10. Certificate of Greek language proficiency for international candidates, where required.
  11. Any additional material the candidate considers relevant for providing the Evaluation Committee with a more complete picture of their academic and research profile.

Evaluation Procedure

The evaluation of prospective postgraduate students is conducted by the Evaluation Committee for Postgraduate Candidates, which consists of at least three members of the Department’s academic staff (faculty) and is appointed by decision of the Department’s Assembly.
The selection process is based on the following evaluation criteria:

Degree/Diploma grade.

Grades in undergraduate courses related to the subject area of the MSc Program.

Performance on the undergraduate thesis, where applicable.

Research or professional activity related to the subject area of the MSc Program.

Publications and other scholarly work.

Letters of recommendation.

Personal interview, conducted via remote videoconferencing.

The final ranking list of admitted and waitlisted candidates is prepared by the Evaluation Committee, approved and ratified by the Department’s Assembly. The list is then announced by the Secretariat of the MSc Program and posted on the Department’s website.

*Successful candidates must register in the MSc Program within the deadline announced by the Secretariat, submitting the required documents listed in the official announcement. If one or more candidates fail to register, candidates on the waiting list will be invited to register, according to their ranking in the approved list.
